A new infrared method allows processors to undertake inline measuring of the degree of exfoliation and alignment of nanoclays loaded into plastic composites. The creator says previous methods were often time consuming, but this new process represents an analytical method that allows accurate measurements with reduced testing time and cost.

Nanoclays as a filler are seeing increasing use in resins as a means to improve flame retardance and barrier properties, as well as create lighter-weight products with enhanced mechanical properties. In order to achieve these benefits, the clays must be properly exfoliated and dispersed throughout the material.
