During its annual assembly earlier this month, the members of Assocomaplast, Italy's trade association for manufacturers of plastics and rubber processing machinery, equipment and molds, elected new officers, voted to fund a global marketing program for Italian machinery, and talked about its members' cumulative sales figures for the first quarter of the year. So far, so good in 2011 for Italy's machine makers.

The year in progress is proving especially good for extruder manufacturers in Italy, which saw export demand improve by 27% to almost €55 million in the quarter.

For the period Jan. - Mar. 2011 total machinery and mold imports reached nearly €130 million and exports approached the €500 million mark, a 12% and 24% increase, respectively, compared to the same period in 2010. Export of molds was up from €115 million (Q1 2010) to €124 million (Q1 2011), while export of parts and components jumped from €56 million to €89 million for the same periods.

Export of the country's injection molding machinery also improved year-over-year in the quarter from €14.5 million to €19.4 million, but imports of these machines increased too (€12.9 million to €16.2 million). With nearly €25 million in exports in the first quarter of this year, blowmolding machine sales remain a significant potion of the country's machine manufacturing industry, but this number actually dropped from 1Q 2010 (€27.6 million).

Germany remains the top market for Italian plastics machinery exports. China moved up to become the 2nd most important export market, followed by France, the U.S. and Poland. Demand in India and Brazil each rose by more than 100% to exceed €20 million.

Assocomaplast members also elected their new board of directors for the period 2011-2014. Elected were Vincenzo Balzanelli (from the company F.B. Balzanelli Avvolgitori), Elisabetta Cirielli (Cibra Nova), Michele Gamberini (SICA), Massimo Margaglione (Gefit), Leonardo Peli (Govini Sim Bianca Impianti), Pierino Persico (Persico), Nicola Piovan (Piovan), Dario Previero (Previero N.) and Silvio Tavecchia (Negri Bossi).

The trade group's Assembly also voted to fund an international marketing program beginning in the second half of the year, with the focus developing markets including India, Malaysia, Hungary and more.
