Pipe extruder boosts output, energy efficiency with new gearbox oil

Delivering a 3.3% energy efficiency improvement in the extruder gearbox, while extending oil drain intervals, a new industrial gear oil is providing German plastic pipe and shaped product extruder Ostendorf multiple benefits. Ostendorf  is using the Mobil SHC Gear 220 oil in its extruder gear boxes, cutting average gearbox temperature by 5°C, which has served to reduce wear and improve performance.

Ostendorf tried out ExxonMobil's new Mobil SHC Gear Series in a two-phase test program, running Mobil SHC Gear 220 on a Weber extruder gearbox and comparing it to the existing lubricant, a mineral ISO 220 gear oil. The first phase examined the existing lubricant Ostendorf was using in the gearbox across two different production cycles, with varied power consumption levels and material throughputs.

The second phase involved the gearbox being drained, flushed and refilled with Mobil SHC Gear 220. The machines were then operated at the same levels and throughputs as the first phase. During both phases, a testing tool - the FLUKE Type 1735 - measured energy efficiency in kW per kilogram of product.
