Plastec West 2002

0102i26a.jpg If you're looking for a warm place to visit in Feburary, you might consider Anaheim, CA. Although there's no guarantee the sun will shine every day, there's a good chance you'll find the equipment or business advice you need among the host of trade shows and conferences to be held at the Anaheim Convention Center Feb. 4-7. The four colocated expos—Plastec West, Medical Design & Manufacturing West (MD&M), Pacific Design & Manufacturing, and Electronics West—are produced by Canon Communications LLC and are expected to draw a total of 1800 exhibitors and 24,000 attendees to the convention center's four halls and six feature pavilions. Plastec West, cosponsored by IMM and now in its second year, will hold the greatest interest for injection molders of the four shows. The 200-plus exhibitors promise to give attendees a look at the latest in primary processing machinery, molds and mold components, auxiliary equipment, materials, CAD/CAM software, and more. If you're wondering who in your company to send to the show, attendees typically include those in management, R&D, production and manufacuturing, quality assurance, purchasing, and marketing. Presenting opportunities for those in the medical market, MD&M West will gather contract manufacturers as well as suppliers of most every type of product a medical manufacturer might need: packaging, sterilization, and cleanroom equipment; raw materials; assembly, manufacturing, and CNC equipment; automation technology; IVD equipment; medical electronics; motion control, motors, and pumps; CAD, CAM, and PDM software; and other equipment related to the manufacture of durable and disposable medical devices.

0102i27a.jpgThose in engineering, product and industrial design, purchasing, marketing, and management will want to wander through the Pacific Design & Manufacturing Show. Here you can check out the expanded product pavilions highlighting CAD/CAM/PDM, electronics, contract manufacturing, packaging, automation technology, and small motors and motion control.

Electronics West, teaming up for the first time with Canon Communications' other expos, will feature its own medical electronics product pavilion containing 160 exhibitors. The latest in embedded systems, ASICs, LEDs, EPROM, power supplies, fiber optics, and more will be on display. Finally, don't forget to unwind at the free Mardis Gras Madness networking party on Tuesday, Feb. 5 from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

IMM Management Conferences

While you're in Southern California, you'll have the opportunity to attend one of two annual conferences sponsored by IMM: the Molding Management Conference or the Technology Management Conference. Both will be held Feb. 4-5. Hours Monday are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Tuesday, at the Anaheim Convention Center, Level 2, in conjunction with Plastec West.

The Molding Management Conference, entitled, "What the Customer Wants: At Home and Abroad," will focus on the needs and demands of OEMs, and how molders can target new business. For those interested in pursuing or initiating a relationship with medical, electronics, or contract manufacturers, representatives from Lucent Technologies, Civco Medical, and Trend Technologies will be among the presenters. After the first day in the classroom, be sure to stop by IMM's annual networking reception in the ESPN Sports Zone from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Day two addresses lean manufacturing practices and valuable insights on setting up operations outside U.S. borders. Ed Noggle of Kenzymi Precision Ltd. and Dave Johnson of Apple Computer will be among those discussing strategies for taking business global.

If technology development is what you're looking for, IMM's Annual Technology Management Conference will provide critical information covering energy consumption and efficiency, 3-D CAD optimization, tooling strategies, process control, supply chain management, and leading-edge technologies such as microcellular molding, TXM, and MIM.

Designers will want to work into their schedules Glenn Beall's conference on "Plastic Part Design for Economical Injection Molding" on Wednesday, Feb. 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

After Jan. 4, registration for each IMM conference costs $750 and includes admission to all four concurrent expos. To register, visit www.immconference.com, call (310) 996-9413, or e-mail [email protected].
