Shredder Systems Cut Scrap Down To Size

pn3-799.jpgBall & Jewell's new SB Series of shredders and shredder/granulators are designed for the size reduction of such large and bulky items as purgings, edge trim and sheet materials. Electrically and hydraulically powered models are  available with single or paired motors ranging from 10 to 225 hp. Cutting chambers run from 14 x 20 in. to 79 x 43 in.

Two parallel hex-keyed shafts power counter-rotating beds of hook-type cutters, ingesting, breaking and shredding the scrap. High torque and low speed rotation is said to provide for safer and quieter operation with less fly-back and reduced wear on cutting surfaces than higher speed shredders.

A dual-stage shredder/granulator system combines one of the above shredders with a Ball & Jewell granulator that best matches the processor's required throughput. For example, if a 22- x 24-in. shredder is used, the company will pair it with its BP42 series 12- x 30-in. granulator. The shredder reduces the large parts or purgings into smaller pieces that automatically drop into the granulator.

These systems are said to provide fast and efficient size-reduction of material to consistent regrind size. They also reportedly use less energy and have lower peak loads than a granulator-only system. Motors and equipment size are smaller and overall maintenance can be lower.

Pricing for the shredder-only systems ranges from $30,000 to $300,000. Pricing for shredder/granulator systems can vary greatly, but the combination mentioned above goes for $69,000.
