Terms of the purchase were not disclosed. Selling Pira was plastics and chemicals supplier BASF (Leverkusen, Germany), which acquired Pira with its acquisition last year of additives supplier Ciba. Pira's headquarters are in Leatherhead, England; it employs about 120 at five facilities in the UK and the U.S.

"Pira represents a tremendous strategic fit for Smithers," commented Michael Hochschwender, president and CEO of The Smithers Group. Pira provides strategic and technical consulting, intelligence and organizes events to the packaging, paper and print industry supply chains. Its  IntertechPira business prepares and markets reports for industries including lighting and displays, clean energy, home and personal care, industrial biotechnology, performance materials and chemicals.

The Smithers Group (Akron, OH) includes Smithers Viscient, Smithers Pharma Services, Smithers Rapra, Smithers Quality Assessments, iSmithers, and now Pira International and IntertechPira.
