Specialty LCD film plant for TaiwanSpecialty LCD film plant for Taiwan

Responding to rising demand for LCD flat panel televisions, Toray Advanced Film Co. (Tokyo) plans to start up a polyethylene-based self-adhesive protective film plant in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The film is used during the manufacture of optical films and panels used in LCD displays.

Toray Advanced Film Kaohsiung Co. will start manufacturing Toretec film in January 2013 with capacity eventually rising to 17,000 tonnes per year. In recent years, with LEDs gaining popularity as backlights for LCDs, demand for surface protection films is rapidly increasing across Asia led by demand in luminance improvement films and light guide panels, which are components indispensable for production of LED-based LCDs.

Toray Advanced Film currently manufactures Toretec film at a plant in Gifu Prefecture, Japan, where it is in the process of raising capacity from 14,000 tonnes/year to 20,000 tonnes/year. The new capacity will be on-stream by December‑[email protected]
