Using a dual coating to provide more zinc content in the cutting zone to aid spark erosion while also providing superior straightness and cleanliness for automatic wire threading, a new gamma-phase wire for EDM machines called Topas Plus Heat Wire is optimized for fast and accurate production.

The result of a two-year collaboration and testing by Makino and Berkenhoff, the new wire is available in North America in 0.010- and 0.012-inch-diameter wires, and on European- and Asian-style spools from Single Source Technologies (Pine Brook, NJ).

Topas Plus Heat reportedly is manufactured specifically to complement Makino’s High-Energy Applied Technology (Heat), but it also can provide up to 40% faster machining speeds vs. traditional single-coated wires on all high-performance wire EDMs, according to SST sources.
