Technology transfer in high-speed machining

Equipment alone is not the answer to the cost, quality, and time pressures facing today's moldmaking industry, says Steve Colston, marketing manager for Makino Inc. "To get the full advantage of the new technology, you need to operate differently, not just run the machines the way you always ran the old ones." This realization prompted Makino's Die/ Mold Div. to launch an aggressive technology transfer program designed to ensure that its customers are getting maximum benefit from their Makino equipment. The first in the ongoing series of die/mold tech-transfer classes took place in mid-June at Makino's Mason, OH facility.

Tim Jones, product support manager for Makino's Die/Mold Div., says the program covers the "torque characteristics of high speed on cores and cavities, DNC and data transfer issues, understanding tool geometries and coatings, tool wear, and utilizing the systems that are built into our controls to get more hours of unattended machining.

"We also deal with speed and feed calculations for modern, high-speed machines because these aren't adequately documented in traditional machining handbooks."

The four-phase program includes the introductory phase in which the customer initially reviews and evaluates Makino equipment and gains exposure to Makino's technology. Next comes formal classroom instruction, which gives customers the big picture in terms of how Makino's technology can be used to reduce lead times, and detailed examinations of the various technological components of Makino's approach such as programming, tooling, speeds and feeds, and so forth.

The third phase of the tech-transfer program comes during machine installation at the customer's plant. "The service engineer who installs the machine provides operator training, and then verifies the operator's understanding of the machine tool and the control by having the operator produce a sample part designed for that purpose," says Jones. Finally, follow-up applications engineering help is available.
