VMC offers value, technology

TNP_Makino_ac.gifIn order to meet the economical pricing needs of smaller shops as well as the high-technology needs of larger operations, Makino has developed the S56 vertical machining center. A 40-taper, 13,000-rpm spindle offers the speed necessary to generate good surface quality and the stiffness and rigidity required for hard-cutting applications.

The S56 also has a 20,000-rpm option. Heavy cast construction and an axis configuration with no overhangs provide high machine rigidity resulting in accuracy over the full range of travel. The S56 can reportedly maintain position accuracy to within .0001 inch and repeatability to ±.00008 inch.

A 20-tool magazine is standard on the S56, as well as an automatic tool changer, which can exchange tools in 1.2 seconds. Linear motion guides on X, Y, and Z axes provide rapid traverse and cutting feedrates of 1575 in/min. The S56 includes Makino?s Super Geometric Intelligence servo control, which can reduce machining cycle times on dies, cavities, and cores by a reported 40% over most other control technologies.

The unit is 98 inches wide by 106 inches deep, with a table/working surface of 40 by 20 inches. Other features include a swing control panel, an air blow and air dryer unit, and a fully enclosed chip and splash shield.
