3D Printer Has Larger Work Envelope

The Genesis Xs 3D printer has a work envelope that is 50% bigger than previous models so users can build parts up to 12 x 8 x 8 in. Firm says the larger build envelope allows users to pack multiple parts over the platen surface or to build larger parts.

The low-cost system can 'print' models at the beginning stages of conceptual development so designers can see a 3D part instead of a 2D sketch. Because the system 'prints' in a durable polyester material, designers can take models to meetings and pass them around for input. The 3D models can also be sanded, drilled and painted.

The system is said to operate quietly, to take up minimal space and is light enough to be set on a desk. Footprint is 36.5 x 32 in. Prices range from $45,000 to $60,000.

Other features include a built-in clock that tracks cumulative build hours, a user-alert for routine service and a new operating system, Linux O/S. The operating system runs on an industrial-grade embedded controller within the machine and makes the unit compatible with intranets. All networked Genisys Xs users can view the entire print queue to check the status of their parts.
