Resin supply: Rhodia shifts PA production in Europe

Article-Resin supply: Rhodia shifts PA production in Europe

French chemical firm Rhodia will close its Ceriano, Italy polyamide (PA) plant, affecting 212 employees, while increasing capacity at its sites in Lyon Belle-Etoile, France and Gorzow, Poland. Rhodia described the plan as an attempt improve the competitiveness of its PA business, which it says is expanding in Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Asia, but “experiencing slower growth” in Western Europe. Rhodia is working towards cutting the company’s costs by euro 40 million by 2010.

Last month, Lanxess AG (Leverkusen, Germany) announced plans to invest euro 35 million to raise caprolactam capacity 10% in the port of Antwerp by 2010, boosting the polyamide (PA) feedstock in response to growing demand for nylon 6. The facility’s current capacity is 200,000 tonnes/yr, with half of the caprolactam monomer used in production of the Durethan PA line.
