Interpack 2014, touted as the world's most important trade fair for the packaging sector and related processing industries, is currently taking place in the Messe Dusseldorf, Germany. Amongst all else going on at the show, the 10 finalists of the biannual packaging innovation contest 'De Gouden Noot 2014' was announced at the booth of the NVC, the Netherlands Packaging Centre. De Gouden Noot is arguably the world's most competitive packaging innovation contest. The award brings a wealth of international publicity and acknowledges the outstanding packaging achievement of the winners.

The name of this competition translates from the Dutch as 'The Golden Nut.' It is therefore more than fitting that the first-place winner is presented with a solid gold walnut. A silver nut is awarded to the second-place finisher, while the bronze nut goes to the contestant placing third.

The second jury round will take place in September, when each finalist will present his or her entry to the complete jury. The winner of De Gouden Noot 2014 will be announced during the 10th NVC Packaging Innovation Dinner on September 30, 2014 at Holland Casino Utrecht.

So, who are the ten finalists?

Plastic pool pallet

MEPPP BV has developed a plastic pool pallet for the same pallet trip price as a wooden pool pallet that eliminates problems such as wood splinters, nails, bacteria and process disruptions because of faulty wooden pallets. The pallets are volumetrically identical to the standard wooden pallets and comply with the ISO 8611 pallet standards. They can also be RFID enabled. Made of recycled post-consumer waste plastic, the injection molded pallet is economically manufactured using new patented production processes and can be repaired just like wooden pallets and consists of parts that can be replaced when necessary.
