The Benelux section of the Society of Plastics Engineers has announced the winners of the first Polymers and Plastics Innovation Awards. The awards, established to honor outstanding performance and innovative achievement of companies in the plastics industry, recognized winners of innovative plastics products in the following eight categories: Best Plastic Design; Plastics & Electronics; Material Innovation; Hybrid Product; Best Substitute Product; Best Lightweight Innovation; New Surfaces for Plastics and Recycling.

The competition was co-organized by Flanders Plastics Vision (the Belgian Plastics innovation and competence cluster) and NRK (the Dutch Rubber and Plastics Federation).

The award ceremony took place this year at the Kunststoffen 2014 trade show, the biggest annual plastics event in the Benelux. Next year's ceremony is planned to take place in Brussels, as, stimulated by the European Commission and supported by PlasticsEurope, the SPE competition will be organized on a European scale.

A jury made up of industry experts, academia and design specialists judged the entries in the light of a number of criteria, including cost, sustainability, novelty, material, tooling, engineering, part complexity and design. Eight winning companies and products, large and small, were selected from a total of 35 entries.
