Stora Enso to close converting unit in Hungary

According to the company, converting operations at its Páty Mill in Hungary will be permanently closed down by the end of the third quarter of 2012, and will affect 79 employees.

The proposed restructuring measures may reduce the number of employees at Barcelona in Spain by 15. No decisions will be taken until after the local co-determination negotiations have concluded, the company stated.

The Páty mill manufacturers multi-color, offset printed corrugated board consumer packaging in flute profiles B, E, F and N.

"Demand for corrugated board consumer packaging has significantly weakened in Hungary, so we plan to centralize our operations in Hungary to Komarom Mill and close down Páty Mill," said Mats Nordlander, EVP of Renewable Packaging, in a news release.

"The efficiency measures planned in Barcelona are intended to improve the mill's profitability," he added.

The company has recently touted its Primeforma board for thermoformed food packaging.

The bottom of the Primeforma package is made of fiber-based board, and the sealable thin lid of the package is made of plastic film, which allows the fresh product to be seen in the modified atmosphere of the package, the company stated.
