A process that bundles high loads of pigments and additives into a patented pelletized product called G2 from Carolina Color Corp. (Salisbury, NC; www.carolinacolor.com) has optimized production capacity by generating less total weight. Although Carolina Color reports increased sales in the past two years since G2’s introduction, the decline in production will result in closing the company’s Lancaster, TX plant and consolidating work into its other facilities in Salisbury and Delaware, OH.

The product’s low letdown ratios means a reduction in inventory and floor space for customers, and a 15-30% cost-to-color reduction, making the G2 technology equivalent to the cost of liquid colorant. The G2 pellets are said to be processed with a 5-10% cycle reduction and at lower temperatures, while it incorporates quickly to reduce flow lines and streaking in large parts. These improved physical properties allow for potential lightweighting of products. Matt Barr, president of Carolina Color, says that the growth generated by G2 has led to strategic relationship dialogue with organizations in Europe and Asia.
