Bugaboo is helping new parents reduce their carbon footprint with a stroller made mostly from bio-based materials. DSM Engineering Materials, Fibrant, and Neste participated in its conception.

Call it the sustainable stroller: A new baby buggy featuring a majority of parts made from bio-based material was unveiled Friday at K 2022 in Düsseldorf, Germany.

The result of a collaboration by DSM Engineering Materials, Fibrant, Neste, and Bugaboo, the stroller is made primarily of parts using DSM’s Akulon 100% bio-based B-MB polyamide 6 (PA6). That material is made with bio-based feedstock from Fibrant and Neste, including Neste RE, a feedstock for polymers made 100% from bio-based materials such as waste and residues. Also part of the mix is Fibrant’s EcoLactam Bio, a caprolactam with a carbon fiber footprint of 3.3 (expressed in kg CO2-eq/kg caprolactam). This bio-based version of caprolactam, the key building block of PA6, has reduced Fibrant’s carbon footprint by more than 50%, the company’s website noted.

Akulon B-MB offers about a 75% reduction in PA6 carbon footprint compared to conventional PA6 — and up to 24% for the entire stroller. With mechanical performance that is identical to conventional Akulon grades, the bio-based version is a drop-in substitute that meets Bugaboo’s safety standards.

The stroller, which will be available in stores and online in coming months, is part of Bugaboo’s plan to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions by 2035. The company plans to transition its entire stroller portfolio to bio-based materials beginning in 2023.

The Bugaboo stroller is on display at DSM Engineering Materials in hall 6, booth B11.
