Teknor Apex buys DSM’s Sarlink TPV unit

Article-Teknor Apex buys DSM’s Sarlink TPV unit

Custom compounder Teknor Apex has acquired the Sarlink thermoplastic vulcanizate business unit from DSM, with plans to retain its employees and plants and keep selling the product under the Sarlink brand name. Both parties agreed not to disclose financial details yet.

For Teknor Apex (Pawcatuck, RI), the purchase adds TPVs to the already broad portfolio of compounds it offers. "Teknor Apex is a natural fit for the Sarlink group, and the synergies from our combined people and resources will benefit the customers of both," said Bertram Lederer, executive vice president of Teknor Apex.

Teknor Apex reckons Sarlink TPVs will complement its established thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) offerings and expand its portfolio at the high-performance end, particularly for automotive applications, the largest end-use market for Sarlink's TPVs. Sarlink also arguably is better established in Europe whereas Teknor Apex has stronger footing in the Americas and Asia.

Sarlink operates compounding facilities in Leominster, MA, and Genk, Belgium and employs approximately 90 at those sites plus in offices in Detroit, Sittard (The Netherlands), Shanghai, and Singapore. Its net sales in 2009 were €70 million.

TPV sees use in automotive applications in soft touch interiors, sealing systems, chassis, underhood systems, and wiring components.
