Thin-walled packaging processors attending the big plastics trade show this autumn, the K in Düsseldorf, Germany, will want to take a look at what thermoforming machine manufacturer Kiefel has done with its Speedformer KMD80.

Its manufacturer says the KMD80 automatic pressure forming machine helps reduce thermoformed-component production costs by 10% due to its ability to recover energy and to its low power consumption. Depending on material, operating tempo is up to 65 cycles/min and the unit is said to offer reduced material consumption through optimized utilization of the forming area.

The unit also has a new film conveying system that provides increased accuracy. The chain-guide system keeps the feed rate constant. Forming area is 600 mm by 800 mm. The line comes with Simotion controls from Siemens. An integrated system for positioning and an SPC placed directly in the drive are claimed to minimize cycle times. As an option, Kiefel's CAT (Computer Aided Teaching) tool for self-optimizing initial machine startup is also available. Kiefel is exhibiting at the K at Stand 3E73; Siemens has taken 10A40.

In other news, Kiefel is offering a new automated cup-stacking unit for its high-speed KTR family of thermoformers. The unit is said to offer processors more cost effectiveness. Many of the elements are wear-free so as not to produce dust or debris that could cause problems when processing food packaging applications. The automated stacker, which can handle both cups and other formed components, was codeveloped with Teisendorf, Germany-based automation specialist Rudholzer (Stand 3F96 at the K show.)
