Thermoforming: New series optimized for APET processingThermoforming: New series optimized for APET processing

New from GN Thermoforming Equipment (Chester, NS) is the GN DX series of thermoformers, a new line of servo-driven machines now available in two sizes. The GN 3021 DX comes with a forming area of 30 by 21 inches (762 by 533 mm), and the larger GN 3625 DX offers a forming area of 36 by 25 inches (914 by 635mm).

(Chester, NS) is the GN DX series of thermoformers, a new line of servo-driven machines now available in two sizes. The GN 3021 DX comes with a forming area of 30 by 21 inches (762 by 533 mm), and the larger GN 3625 DX offers a forming area of 36 by 25 inches (914 by 635mm). Though the manufacturer has optimized the machines for processing of amorphous polyethylene terephthalate (APET) packaging, they also can convert most other thermoformable grade sheet products, according to Jerome Romkey, GN marketing manager.

The DX machines are fitted with reinforced cast beams for increased rigidity for cutting APET. The GN 3021 DX handles sheet widths up to 815 mm and operates at 25 to 30 dry cycles/min. Power consumption is 7.5 kWh. Despite the large forming area, the machine’s footprint has been kept to 12 feet long by 6 feet wide (3.66 by 1.83 m).

The GN 3625 DX processes sheet up to 965 mm wide at up to 30 cycles/min. Power consumption is 12 kWh. Both machines can run sheet thicknesses ranging from 0.15-1.0 mm.

Accord to the company, the DX line’s transport system, combined with common-edged cutting dies, helps reduce overall scrap to 12% to 14%. Each machine comes with a built-in powered unwinder, an adjustable part stripping point, vacuum hook-up, and an integrated diagnostic system which also allows technicians to monitor and troubleshoot from a remote location. GN Thermoforming has already sold two GN 3021 DX models to companies in the Netherlands and Turkey for production of APET trays for fruit and chocolate products. —[email protected]
