Even the return of many manufactured products from low-cost countries is being hampered by the unavailability of workers skilled in many of the trades required. Offshoring led to many of these skilled workers to find other jobs in other types of work or accept early retirement offers by their employers.

Workforce development challenges and solutions


On September 23-25, the third annual tuXperience, hosted by Tool U-SME (Society of Manufacturing Engineers) will be held at the Millennium Knickerbocker Hotel in Chicago. The focus of the conference will be how best to train the workforce of today and tomorrow, and will showcase successful, integrated training programs used by top manufacturers. Also featured will be nationally recognized training experts and breakout Q&A sessions with current Tooling U-SME customers and those looking to develop a world-class training program.
   
“The tuXeperience is all about how best to build practical knowledge and employee skills through successful, fully integrated training initiatives calibrated to real business needs,” said Jeannine Kunz, SME director, training & development. “This conference brings together manufacturing’s best, brightest and most forward-thinking; those with their hands on the pulse of this industry’s bright future.”

Currently, over 500 community colleges, high schools and middle schools are Tooling U-SME participants, and 50% of Fortune 500 manufacturing companies are Tooling U-SME customers. More than 21,000 individuals and 5000 companies and educational institutions use Tooling U-SME’s onling learning and assessment programs and other training options to address workforce needs. Keynote speakers include Elliott Masie, an internationally recognized futurist focused on workforce learning, business collaboration and emerging technologies; and David Vance, president of Manage Learning LLC, and founder and former head of Caterpillar University. There will be panel discussions covering topics such as “Aligning Tooling U-SMD with Key Business Objectives” and “Establishing Clear Training Program Objectives.”
