American Trade Products (ATP; Ball Ground, GA) has launched a line of thermoformed products combining recycled plastics and additives for products that are certified biodegradable by the ASTM. The first goods to be made from Earth Plastic will be paint trays and sundries to be sold at U.S. retailers Home Depot, Wal-Mart, and Sherwin-Williams. ATP says the proprietary blend of additives added to the 100% recycled plastic base resin results in a product that decomposes in landfill and compost environments, allowing microorganisms to break down the molecular structure of the plastic into soil-like materials. ATP says that, depending on the conditions, Earth Plastic products will biodegrade within two to five years.Going forward, ATP believes Earth Plastic is suitable for a variety of eco-conscious plastic products that reportedly have the identical look, durability, function, and shelf-life of non-biodegradable plastic products, as well as being competitively priced. In addition to thermoformed roller and trim trays and liners, ATP offers injection molded Earth Plastic 3.5- and 5-gallon plastic buckets. ATP’s plastic products are made from R-PET (recycled polyethylene terephthalate) at this time, but a company representative told MPW that Earth Plastic can also be made from all other types of common plastics, including polyolefins, rendering the material and finished products biodegradable in both landfill and compost settings.
In December 2005, ATP moved its headquarters from Marietta, GA to a greenfield site in Ball Ground, GA. —[email protected]
