Clear Lam Packaging sees first commercial application for PrimaPak

Clear Lam Packaging's PrimaPak packaging system is launching at a regional East Coast retailer. Developed for John B. Sanfilippo & Son's Flavor Tree brand, the Limited Edition Premium Dark Chocolate Pretzels will be sold throughout the holidays.

Last year at Pack Expo, Clear Lam introduced its the PrimaPak product line, which is designed as a flexible, stackable replacement for rigid containers, bottles and jars. The PrimaPak package is a flexible package produced from PrimaPak rollstock on a PrimaPak Vertical Form-Fill-Seal (VFFS) machine with a proprietary secondary operation.

The end result is a pop-up box shape that retains its shape, In addition, the Peel and ReSeal Lid opens and reseals to the package with a light touch.

"It's not a stand-up pouch or a rigid container; it's something in between," Roman Forowycz, chief marketing officer for Clear Lam, told PlasticsToday

Forowycz said PrimaPak helps processors and retailers meet their sustainable goals by delivering improved cube utilization and weight reduction compared to traditional rigid packaging, along with reducing truck shipments and warehousing requirements. The PrimaPak is designed to retain the attributes of rigid packaging while delivering the benefits of lightweight, flexible materials.

"To me, the real sustainability story is fewer trucks on the road and reduced freight costs," he said. "This shows sustainability is practical, it's not just a dream, but something that is very tangible and real."

Additional PrimaPak applications and further product expansions are planned in 2014, according to Clear Lam.
