The MDX-650 from Roland recently came out on top in an independent benchmark study from T. A. Grimm & Assoc. of rapid prototyping systems, producing the best fit, function, and pattern prototypes, and the second-best concept models. Unlike other systems tested, the MDX-650 uses "subtractive" technology (it machines the part from a block), which Grimm says gives it an advantage over additive systems in making precise prototypes with a clean surface finish. It can use a wide range of materials. Desktop versions, the MDX-20 and 15, scan as well as mill. Roland DG (UK) Ltd., Swansea, Wales +44 1792 550 142; www.rolanddg.co.uk
