Advanced technologies, safety featured in vertical press

Milacron has married its Xtreem PC-based control system, closed loop control, and digital positioning and hydraulics with an open, tiebarless C frame to create the Magna V, a vertical insert molding machine.

The big inside/small outside frame design allows molds and core cylinders to extend beyond the upper platen sides, reportedly increasing mold capacity up to 30 percent compared to competitive presses. This allows processors to use larger tooling on a smaller-tonnage insert machine, streamlines mold handling, and improves access to mold cooling and electrical connections. The presses are available in 30-, 50- and 80-ton sizes with stationary, shuttle, or rotary tables. Future models will be offered in 120-, 160-, 220-, and 280-ton sizes.

Small rapid traverse cylinders and a prefill design enable rapid tonnage build and fast-cycling clamp speeds for increased parts yield. A variable-volume pump minimizes energy usage, supplemented by a fixed-volume pump for eject and core functions. Closed loop digital control of pump stroke and hydraulic oil temperature (with preheat) reportedly maintains high process stability and consistency.

The company reports improvements from .01 to .001 inch for injection sled positioning. In addition, digital sensors can be programmed with position settings and velocity profiles of injection sled forward motion for faster cycle times. The digital sensors eliminate EMI/RFI noise and are noncontact and wear-free.

Rotary table Magna V models come standard with a light curtain photoelectric cell system on the perimeter. Once inserts are loaded, one-touch cycle time begins, freeing up the operator to work on other procedures such as part inspection or palletizing. Ergonomic improvements include a 10 percent reduction in table height and an adjustable operator station.
