Phosphorescent pellets shine brighter

Those glow-in-the-dark sticks that help you find your way around during a power outage now come in a variety of colors, thanks to a recent development from Midwest Color. The color concentrates, available in pellet form, glow in pink, blue, green, red, and natural.

Phosphorescence, in its raw state, is a small, dense particle that has the consistency of sand. By compounding the material into a stable pellet concentrate, Midwest Color reports the achievement of even distribution throughout the run, avoiding high concentration at the beginning and very little at the end of the run, which results when small particles are used.

The new formulations, some of which have received FDA approval, have an initial brighter glow than previous phosphorescents when light is first removed, and last up to 8 hours when fully charged, according to the manufacturer. One application of note is a release handle for the interior of an automobile trunk, designed to allow escape for children accidentally trapped inside. No pricing information was available.
