Rexam to close Nashua, NH plant in the fourth quarter

Rexam will close its healthcare packaging plant in Nashua, NH in the fourth quarter of this year, with the facility’s injection blowmolded container production to be absorbed by other Rexam facilities. Originally opened in 1974, the site employs approximately 100 people, all of whom will be given outplacement assistance by Rexam. The facility was purchased by Rexam from Owens-Illinois’ North American plastics packaging consumer products division as part of the London-based packaging giant’s June 2007 purchase of certain O-I plastics businesses for $1.83 billion. That purchase was one of several over the last six years made to bolster Rexam’s presence in healthcare packaging.

In October 2009, Rexam, consolidated three of its healthcare packaging businesses: Rexam Pharma, Primary Packaging, and Prescription, installing Marc Haemel, the then head of Rexam Pharma, as the new leader of a reorganized Rexam Healthcare.

That business, which is headquartered from Perrysburg, OH, now has 16 factories and 3370 employees in Europe, North America, and Asia, offering injection and injection blowmolded containers, closures, drug-delivery devices, metering pumps, valves, and medical components.

In May of last year, the division expanded its operations in India, inaugurating a new Bangalore injection molding plant on May 14. That business, Rexam Pharma Packaging India, features a 1000m2  class 8 cleanroom that’s fully compliant with cGMP (current good manufacturing practice) standards.

Elsewhere in its U.S. operations, Rexam Pharma has production plants in Buffalo Grove, IL and West Lafayette, IN. On the home and personal care side of the business, Rexam maintains manufacturing facilities in five states (Anderson, SC; Buffalo Grove, IL; Excelsior Springs, MO; Holden, MA; and Newark, DE). —Tony Deligio
