CBW Automation and Polytainers, a food and dairy manufacturer, worked together to create a new line of containers called the "Wave Series."

Polytainers' customer Marzetti was looking to refresh its line of veggie dips, but also looking for a packaging option that would work on existing filling equipment.

The Wave Series features a "wave" around the bottom of the container and the use of in-mold labeling (IML) technology using labels from printing company Verstraete.

2013BestProductFamily_Gold.jpgThe photographic quality of the Verstraete IML labels combined with a transparent window gives an immediate view of the products, according to Verstraete. The Wave Series containers come in 8-, 12-, 14-, 16-, and 24-oz sizes, designed for dips, salsas, olives and yogurts.

Dave Carson, president at CBW, said that working with Polytainers on the IML automation required a level of precision that the company had not previously encountered. The labels are stacked in a label magazine and kept in place using static.

Recently, the Polytainers Wave Series containers won the Best Product Family Gold Award in the In-Mold Decorating Association's (IMDA) Seventh Annual Awards Competition.

Commenting on the overall IML market in North America, Carson said that he believes "IML has gained momentum over the past few years and is continuing to gain momentum in North America."
