Lighting business propels expansion at injection molder PRD

Custom injection molder PRD Inc. (Springville, IN) has recently installed 13 new injection molding machines with three more set to arrive in August. PRD President John A. Passanisi told PlasticsToday the additional molding capacity is being installed in response to growth in automotive, industrial, and LED lighting as well new customer requirements. The three presses to be installed later this summer will replace older machines as the company updates technology.

Lighting business propels expansion at injection molder PRD

PRD offers straight injection and insert molding, with Toshiba, Mitsubishi, Nissei and Engel machines ranging in size from 20 to 390 tons. Passanisi said the newest additions will "primarily" be Toshiba and Nissei models, still in the 20 to 390-ton range. The company's most recent machine additions came in 2012, and it currently has 55 presses in total.

Initially reported by Area Development Online magazine, the expansion was funded in part by $40,000 in training subsidies from the Indiana Economic Development Corp. Passanisi said the county has also aided PRD's expansion.

"Lawrence County has been instrumental in PRD's growth," Passanisi said. "They have provided tax abatement for a positive place for business to thrive." Over the last year the company has expanded its headcount as well, adding 23 employees.

At this time, Passanisi said the company's existing 60,000-sq-ft plant, which is situated on 21 acres, has sufficient room, but it is being evaluated for future expansion if needed.
