National Association of Manufacturers: Make America united again

Can we all just get along? I know, the sentiment seems naive at this stage, but at some point on Nov. 8 or in the wee hours of Nov. 9—heaven help us if it goes beyond that—we will know the outcome of the 2016 presidential election. In a spirit of reconciliation, the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM; Washington, DC) has drafted an open letter to the president-elect expressing a desire to work together. It invites like-minded company CEOs, presidents, chairs and owners to sign the letter, which will be sent on Nov. 9 to the next president.

In essence, the letter states that we are stronger as a nation when we stand united, and that the business community has a shared belief in the urgent need to restore faith in our economic and government institutions. “American families, businesses and our communities cannot truly prosper and reach their full potential in a country that is divided and distrustful,” writes NAM.

Regardless of the outcome, the association acknowledges that there will be disagreements on specific policies with the incoming administration. It adds, however, that “we can be constructive—both when we agree and when we do not—if we can all approach challenging situations in good faith.”

The letter concludes with a call to move “beyond the harshness of the campaign season” and put “our nation, and our democratic system, first before all else.”
