Who can turn down ice cream, especially when it?s packaged in a clear container? Until recently, transparent PP that resists deep-freeze temperatures was nonexistent. Borealis (Port Murray, NJ) spent two years developing a clarified PP called Borpact SG930MO, which meets the requirements for ice cream and other deep-freeze products.

The company says that an increased marketing emphasis on the display value of frozen desserts had customers clamoring for a clear product.

?We strive to present the unique attributes of our premium brands and products in a way that appeals to the consumer and Borpact SG930MO offers that solution,? says Gijs Van Schoot, packaging materials group manager, Unilever Foods Europe.

The clarified PP overcomes the technical challenge of combining transparency and low-temperature impact in thin-wall, injection moldable PP, and delivers additional productivity benefits, according to Borealis. The material offers multicavity mold filling at wall thicknesses as small as .6 mm.

Besides transparent ice cream packaging, the new grade is projected as a good fit with other food and housewares applications such as freezer boxes, bread bins, and storage boxes.
