Expanding its medical base, Nypro acquires Schlosser Medizintechnik

Nypro, which employs about 15,000 people at 44 locations in 15 countries, has been active in the medical market since the company's 1955 founding, and is currently focused on diagnostics, drug delivery, and various medical/surgical market sub-sectors. The company's most recently published annual revenues were $1.25 billion.

Schlosser, which was founded in 1969, employs around 150 people at its 15,700m² factory in Southwest Germany, a facility that includes Class 7 and Class 8 clean rooms.

The agreement was jointly announced by Ted Lapres, Nypro CEO/president and Peter Pronath, president, GM, and major shareholder of Schlosser. Lapres noted that, "Schlosser's customers include many of the best-known medical device companies in Europe. We look forward to supplying these customers with the world class diagnostic manufacturing technology for which Schlosser is a leader,"

Nypro's James O'Gorman, VP operations for Europe and Asia, said the two companies have worked together for over a year to identify market and technology synergies, and adding that there is a strong cultural fit between the two due to their common entrepreneurial heritage. The management teams, he said, have developed very strong working relationships over the last year and are already working on several joint projects.

Nypro says it will add Schlosser's technical strength to its recently expanded healthcare facilities in Ireland and France, noting that large healthcare companies seek to consolidate their supply bases and look for companies like Nypro for its global reach and technical expertise. This allows the OEMs to expand or move product rapidly on a global scale.

A week prior to the announcement of the Schlosser acquisition, the U.S. state of North Carolina announced a project that will see Nypro Healthcare expand in Asheville, NC to produce insulin injection devices.
