Extruder supplier Leistritz has added a controlled temperature and dew point room to its twin-screw extrusion process laboratory in Somerville, NJ to develop products for the plastics, medical, and pharmaceutical industries. Charlie Martin, Leistritz general manager at the site, estimated that the company invested about $200,000 in the lab, which occupies 10,000 sq ft. The facility features five twin-screw extruders, more than 20 feeders, and downstream systems for pelletization, film/sheet, laminates and profiles. Leistritz says it has recently added two extruders-a ZSE-50 MaXX twin-screw with a 300-hp motor and 1.66 OD/ID ratio, and a Nano 16-mm twin-screw to process 20 to 100g batch samples-as well as a supercritical-gas injection system for foamed products, co-extrusion tooling for film/sheet sampling, and strand and underwater pelletizing equipment with production rates up to 2000 lb/hr. Martin said the gas-injection system is being applied for foaming polyethylene, cellulosics, and polylactic acid (PLA).—[email protected]
