Horizontal-arm CMM ideal for big workpieces

Citing growing demand for horizontal-arm coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) for bulky and heavy workpieces, the Carmet XL has been added to the Carl Zeiss line of CMMs. The company reports high demand from the auto industry with its proliferation of vans and SUVs. The XL measuring arm axes (y=1600 mm, z= 2400 mm) can encompass the driver?s compartment of a truck. In CNC duplex and four-arm systems, the y-axis has a range of 2800 mm. The especially rigid measuring plates of the XL Series can handle high loads with no loss of measuring accuracy. Individual measuring plates can be combined to provide a measuring range of 4 to 14m in the x-axis. Standard load capacity of the table is 7 tons, and as much as 26 tons in the heavy-load version. As with all Carmet models, mathematical calibration of the RDS-CAA rotary dynamic sensor means that the probe is calibrated in a few positions, and then can be used in all 20,736 angular positions. Both the calibration process and the actual measurement are reportedly improved.
