Toray's Korean Subsidiary Obtains ISCC Plus Seal for PPS Resin

Japan’s Toray Industries Inc. reports that its wholly owned Korean subsidiary Toray Advanced Materials Korea Inc. has obtained ISCC Plus certification for the polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) resin manufactured at its Gunsan plant. International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) is an independent multi-stakeholder certification system supporting sustainable, fully traceable, deforestation-free, and climate-friendly supply chains. ISCC Plus certification ensures that raw materials derived from recyclate or biomass are properly managed in the supply chain through a mass-balance approach.

ISCC Plus certification enables Toray Advanced Materials Korea to produce and supply PPS resins incorporating raw materials made from biomass naphtha and pyrolysis oil from waste plastics allocated using the mass balance method with the same attributes as fossil-derived PPS resins. Preparations are currently underway for mass production to start.

The Toray Group is the world’s largest integrated PPS manufacturer, spanning neat resin to compounds, fibers, and films. Toray Advanced Materials Korea and Toray’s Tokai plant in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, have the world’s largest combined PPS polymerization capacity. Toray Advanced Materials Korea supplies PPS resins to group compounding sites in China, Europe, the United States, and Southeast Asia.

Toray is in the process of acquiring the same certification at the Tokai plant and aims to establish a global supply structure for eco-friendly PPS resins by developing supply capabilities at compounding sites in countries where it operates.
