NOVA reconfigures N.A. EPS capacity
NOVA Chemicals (Pittsburgh, PA) will cut expandable polystyrene (EPS) capacity from 285 to 180 million lb/yr at its Monaca, PA site while increasing output from 85 to 100 million lb/yr in Painesville, OH in a rationalization.

NOVA Chemicals (Pittsburgh, PA) will cut expandable polystyrene (EPS) capacity from 285 to 180 million lb/yr at its Monaca, PA site while increasing output from 85 to 100 million lb/yr in Painesville, OH in a rationalization. The moves are part of NOVA’s broader strategy to realign its styrenics business, with the updated EPS product slate to include 10 resin grades for cup and container; protective packaging; and construction applications like insulation, geo-foam, and insulated concrete forms.NOVA, which was acquired in February by Abu Dhabi’s International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC), produces polyolefins and styrenics, including polystyrene (PS), EPS, and styrene maleic anhydride (SMA). The Monaca site has capacity to manufacture roughly 475 million lb 
(209 kilotonnes) of resin annually, including PS, EPS, and Dylark SMA. In addition to the Monaca and Painesville plants, the company produces EPS in Chile at sites in Quilicura, near Santiago, and El Tepual, near Puerto Montt, Chile. Former Shell Chemicals operations, which were acquired by NOVA in early 2000, the operations have 3.5 and 2.1 kilotonnes/yr capacity for EPS, respectively. —[email protected]
