To ensure its premium PetBalance Medica pet food catches the eye of dog and cat owners, pet food supplier MultiFit-Tiernahrungs GmbH turned to a stand-up pouch-like plastics package converted by Mondi with a recloseable slider from Pactiv. MultiFit is a subsidiary of Fressnapf, Europe's largest specialty chain for pet food and accessories.

High-end three-layer plastic bags are used to pack this premium label pet food.

The product protected by the pouch is PetBalance Medica, developed for dogs and cats suffering from illnesses such as adiposity, gastro-intestinal disorders, food intolerances, or urinary tract disorders. Keeping the product's premium ingredients fresh is handled by a multi-layer barrier film converted by Mondi. Judith Schwendemann, marketing manager at Mondi Consumer Bags & Films, told MPW that the bags are made of a three-layer construction composed of transparent PET for the outer layer, metalized PET for the aroma and freshness barrier, and PE for the inner layer.

The bag is equipped with a Slide-Rite front slider, supplied to Mondi by Pactiv, so a consumer can open the package and reclose it securely without reaching for a knife or other sharp tool, explains Christian Kolarik, managing director Mondi Consumer Bags & Films. The bags, sized 2 kg, 2.5 kg, and 8 kg, are topped with a carrier handle. The photo shows a 2-kg bag.

A silver cross-shaped part of the metalized middle film is visible at the front of the package, with the metallic glitter helping emphasize the high quality and strengthen the brand image.

The customer is pleased with his new packs. "The sales figures evince that the brand is well accepted in the market," states Jörg Wasel, head of the private label business unit at Fressnapf. "We would definitely choose the reclosable front slider bag for big bags if the PetBalance Medica product line were extended."
