Pregis Launches Carbon-Neutral Film for Protective Packaging
Introduced in Europe, the film is used to make air cushioning that protects products from damage during distribution.

Pregis, based in the Netherlands, is bringing its sustainability focus to protective packaging with a new carbon-neutral air-cushioning film called Renew Zero. The polyethylene film is currently only available in Europe.
Renew Zero is made from 50% post-consumer recycled content. The other 50% is renewable plant waste, such as cellulose fiber, that has been certified by International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC). The film is also recyclable.
According to Pregis, Renew Zero is carbon neutral without dependence on carbon-offset methods like planting trees.
The film is compatible with the Pregis AirSpeed MINI PAK’R machine, which produces air cushions in five film configurations. The equipment uses radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to automatically choose the appropriate seal temperature, air flow, and seal pressure for the film.
Renew Zero complies with EN13427, the European legislation for packaging and packaging waste. In addition, Pira and Emitwise have independently tested the film to confirm that the air pillows are 100% carbon dioxide (CO2)-neutral.
“We took a ‘cradle to loading gate’ approach when selecting the components for Renew Zero,” said Lisanne Bock, Pregis Product Manager, Air Systems, in a prepared statement.
“Because this film is partly made from ISCC-certified renewable plant waste, photosynthesis ensures that CO2 is taken out of the atmosphere and replaced with oxygen, resulting in a negative CO2 value,” Bock added. “These ISCC-certified sources and production processes ensure a carbon-neutral product that contributes to a sustainable world and circular economy.”
The new film supports the company’s 2K30 sustainability goals, which include making 100% of Pregis products recyclable, reusable, or with a minimum 30% reduced reliance on new fossil-based ingredients and investing $15 million in circular, scalable, and sustainable material, process, and waste solutions globally by 2030.
