Toray Plastics develops new BOPP film for packaging applications

Toray Plastics recently launched its Torayfan MWX6 metallized white cavitated biaxially-oriented polypropylene film, targeting gas-flushed packaging applications.

The new Torayfan MWX6 metallized white BOPP film is designed with a proprietary, "ultra-barrier" layer on one side for "superior moisture-barrier and excellent oxygen-barrier functionality."

Kerri Boyens, product manager for the Torayfan division, told PlasticsToday that Toray's advanced barrier technology, which they brand as "ultra-barrier" is proprietary, so they cannot offer details about it.

image002_0.jpg"However, extensive testing has demonstrated that the moisture barrier functionality of new MWX6 film is superior to that of other films on the market," Boyens said. "Moisture barrier is essential for product freshness, superior moisture barrier takes barrier performance to a higher level."

The other side of MWX6 film is a hermetic, heat-sealable layer. The new MWX6 film can be used as a monoweb or a lamination and runs on horizontal form fill seal (HFFS) and vertical form fill seal (VFFS) machines.

Boyens said that Toray's new MWX6 metallized white cavitated BOPP film gives end users and converters "a distinct advantage in its performance and aesthetics, as compared with other films."

"In addition, it has a unique glossy, bright white appearance that is very attractive," Boyens said. "Barrier performance and appearance are critical to the end user because they contribute to a positive brand experience for their customer, the consumer."

Available in 100 and 110 gauges (1 - 1.1 mil), the MWX6 film is targeting packaging for salty crisp snacks, baked goods, confectionery items, pet food, and refrigerated and frozen foods. Torayfan MWX6 film can also be used for agricultural and chemical packaging.

MWX6 film is available domestically and internationally, and the company will ship it to any region.

"Metallized white BOPP films previously available to the market were limited in barrier capability and appearance," Boyens said. "Now end users and converters have a new value-added choice available to them."
