Atofina, Paris, is acquiring a 100,000-tonne/yr polystyrene plant in Guangdong, China, from China Offshore Oil Sanshui Chemical Industry. Atofina, the world’s third-largest ps producer, already operates a plant in Singapore, and two compounding units there and in Thailand. According to Atofina spokesperson Maria-Pierre Galhaut, this deal doesn’t nix the potential one reported early last year, in which Atofina is negotiating with local interests to construct a 300,000-tonne/yr plant at a Shell Chemicals facility in Huizhou, China (modplas.com, Mar. 11, 2002).
