Boy machines continue to redefine compact

Dr. Boy has a natural advantage at trade shows: It can fit many of its compact injection machine systems into its stand, and still have space for people to watch them work. At K 2010 there were no less than 16 Boy systems on the stand. But the machines’ small size is inversely proportional to the amount of technology that is packed into them.
Most prominent on the display was a new Boy 35 E (350 kN clamp force) demonstrating its numerous major enhancements. At the heart of the machine is a synchronous servo motor with a gear pump. An electronically controlled converter regulates the motor.
Boy’s significantly enhanced 35 E (350 kN) injection machine (foreground) has a converter-regulated servomotor pump drive for precise, dynamic closed-loop control of pressure and speed. The Boy 35 E HV (behind the 35 E) is purpose-designed for parting line injection. |
Nominal pressure and quantity values are set via Boy’s Procan Alpha control system. The actual values then are measured simultaneously and regulated in a closed loop. The converter, managed with special software, executes precise, highly dynamic control of both pressure and speed.
The pump speed is always matched precisely to the requirements of each phase of the cycle, and between the end of dosing time and the end of cooling time, the motor and pump consume exactly zero energy. Boy says energy consumption can be so low in some applications that additional oil cooling is not required—another energy saving. Precious molding room floor space is also saved, as the 35 E’s footprint has been reduced again, this time to 1.9m2, which Boy says is the smallest in its class.
Among Boy’s other novelties at the K were the Boy 35 E HV, purpose-designed for parting line injection, and the Boy 35 E VV vertical molding machine made for overmolding, with only a 1.7m2 footprint. Klaus Geimer, Boy’s director of sales and marketing, said, “The K show was very positive for Boy. The number of visitors to our booth, the positive meetings, and the resulting quotes and orders exceeded our high expectations.” —PTStaff
