Plastics replace sheet metal in radio cases

Sheet metal is out, plastics are in for an injection molded plastic radio housing developed by Delphi Automotive. I wish I could take credit for finding out about it on my own, but a good second-best is that a friend and former colleague, Doug Smock at Design News, did; his article’s here and well worth a read.

According to the article, the case weighs 22% less than the metal one it replaces. The plastic case meets EMI and RFI shielding requirements by surrounding the electronics with a mesh Faraday cage that is insert molded. The article goes into the specifics of the insert molding and assembly magic that is the real technical highlight of the development.

Not only is the plastic case lighter, but it also provides better shielding than the metal cases it replaces.
