Study results reveal interest in expanding LSR market

The North American liquid silicone rubber (LSR) market is projected to expand by 10-12% annually in the coming years, which led D-M-E Co. (Madison Heights, MI; www.dme.net) to commission an independent research study on this growing market. The firm Scheibel Halaska (Milwaukee, WI; www.insidesh.com) conducted the study involving 471 participants, which included moldmakers, molders, design firm consultants, and OEMs working in both the rubber and plastics industries.

Study results reveal interest in expanding LSR market

The results revealed that, while 34% of rubber participants were currently processing LSR, no plastics processors had expanded capabilities to include LSR yet, but 32% of these plastic processors (and 43% of rubber processors) said they would like to learn more about LSR processes and business opportunities.

“As an essential resource to molders and moldmakers, we are committed to helping them benefit from this high-growth market to gain a competitive edge globally,” says Mike Kreitner, Business Manager–Quick Change Mold Systems & Emergent Technologies at D-M-E. “This study provides a clearer look at what the challenges and roadblocks are to processing LSR, which will help us serve our customers more effectively.”

The study showed positive trends that will lead to a market shift toward integrating LSR into a company’s current capabilities, and D-M-E believes that the first step toward widespread implementation is further education on the material, equipment, and processes needed to mold LSR. D-M-E plans to use the survey results to help customers enter and capitalize on the LSR market.
