Resin supply: Ciba, BASF merger moves closer to completion; Ciba secures antimicrobial partner

Ciba Holding AG has elected BASF’s (Ludwigshafen, Germany) Hans-Ulrich Engel, Hans-Walther Reiners, and Jörg Buchmüller to its board of directors, in a move the German chemical, plastics, and energy giant described as bringing it a step closer to acquiring Swiss additive business. In addition, the voting rights and registration restrictions in Ciba Holding AG’s articles of association were removed, further pointing to finalization of the deal, which is expected to be competed in the first quarter of 2009.

In related Ciba news, the company signed an agreement with PURE Bioscience (San Diego, CA) to market and sell that company’s silver dihydrogen citrate antimicrobial as a preservative and biocide for the global personal care, household, and industrial markets. PURE cited Ciba’s global reach, well-established customer base, and commitment to innovation, as reasons it partnered with the company. PURE positions its product as environmentally friendly on the basis that it’s created through a zero-discharge production process that reportedly creates no waste or by-products.
