New Brazilian PE grades for fuel tanks
Closely monitoring the latest trends and needs of its clients, Braskem (Sao Paulo, Brazil) has developed two new automotive grade of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). The new grades that were recently shipped to clients, HS4506 and HS4506A, are being applied in fuel storage systems.Today, 67% of vehicle tanks in Brazil are made from polyethylene," said Claudia Arruda, commercial director at Braskem. This not only lowers weight, but improves safety and allows for greater design freedom compared with metal tanks.

Braskem's new grades and the unique combination of the production process, catalyst and comonomers used make possible products with molecular structures that are unique compared with those currently available according to Braskem. "This means that the new resins offer improved processability, increased chemical and corrosion resistance, lighter weight, greater durability, better compatibility with other resins and low thermal conduction."
The HS4506 grade was developed for the production of automotive fuel tanks, as well as filler tubes and cold-start reservoirs. The resin is also recommended for the production of fluorinated and co-extruded tanks.
Meanwhile, the HS4506A grade contains special additives that ensure greater resistance to ultraviolet radiation and prevailing weather conditions. The grade can be used to make fuel tanks for trucks, while it also can potentially find use in the aftermarket auto parts segment. A key features is the grade's homogeneous appearance, which makes it ideal for exposed tanks, such as those found on trucks.-[email protected]
