Spencer to add equipment, staff to South Carolina thermoforming plant

Thermoformer Spencer Industries (Dale, IN) is investing $1.2 million in a capacity expansion of its Hampton County, SC location that it believes will create a total of 12 new jobs. Plant Manager Todd Warren said the company has already hired two of those 12 new employees, with the remaining 10 to be brought on over the course of the next 18 months. Spencer received support in the expansion from the S.C. Department of Commerce, the Town of Hampton, and Hampton County.

In 2008, Spencer purchased the former T.O. Plastics thermoforming operation in Hampton. That site covers 40,000 ft2, with six thermoforming lines and eight CNC tables. The facility has four rotary and two shuttle-style thermoforming machines.

Spencer’s manufacturing and support operations in Hampton County include thermoforming (vacuum and pressure forming), CNC trimming, fabrication, and assembly, including riveting, crimping, sonic welding, and mechanical fastening. Founded in 1981 in Dale, IN through the purchase of the former Thermwood Corp., Spencer Industries began with 58 employees but has undergone several expansions since then. That plant now covers 240,000 ft2, with 22 thermoforming machines and 36 CNC tables, as well as three co-extrusion lines for sheet production offering widths up to 89 inches and thicknesses up to 0.450 inch. —Tony Deligio
