TPV offers alternative to rubber

A thermoplastic vulcanizate available since early this year is said to combine the performance benefits of thermoset rubber with the cost and production efficiencies of thermoplastics. With reported processing and cycle times a fraction of that for thermoset rubber, J-Prene TPV also is compatible with all thermoplastic processing equipment. It resists weathering, ozone, and oil, and has good chemical and heat resistance, colorability, and a smooth texture among its reported features.

The J-Prene line includes nine general purpose grades for use in a variety of consumer and industrial markets. Hardness ranges from 35 Shore A to 50 Shore D. Pricing was not provided, but TPV end products are said to cost 20 to 30 percent less to produce than those made from thermoset rubber.
