Software automates job quoting, estimating

Tired of the arduous task of job estimating and quoting? A new software package is designed to make that task easier. It also helps capture more information, facilitates ?what-if? analysis, and gives molders greater control over the estimating/quoting process.

The molder can scroll through a series of tabs on the screen that prompts the entering of data about the customer and the part being molded (cavitation, regrind, and so forth). The user can also enter information about various cost-related factors such as setup, labor, and material (including resin, inserts, and other nonplastic materials), as well as molding machines used, packaging, and other functions (postmold decorating, assembly, and so forth).

The system then generates an extended cost based on the quantity specified. It can automatically estimate costs based on up to 10 different quantities, taking into account price breaks (on materials, for example) that may be obtained as quantities increase. Once the quote is accepted by the customer, the molder can approve the quote with a single mouse click. The system will automatically create the appropriate master files, as well as the bill of material and routing. All information goes into a database, eliminating the need to reenter the same information later.

Molders can quote multiple parts on the same estimate and can price subassemblies as well as final assemblies in a single quote. Once data are entered, the molder can perform a quick what-if analysis to determine, for instance, how an arbitrarily lower final part price (to beat a competitor?s bid, perhaps) will affect overall margin. The system can also be used as a cost simulator to project the impact of different scenarios such as an increase in resin prices or an annual standard cost roll-up. The package can be purchased as a stand-alone system starting at $2750 or as part of the manufacturer?s Aims integrated business management system.
