System focuses on automated EDM

Moldmakers looking to run lights-out/overnight operations might take notice of the new Edge2 Series 2000 sinker EDM introduced by Makino. The machine, characterized by the manufacturer as designed specifically for unattended operation for entry-level EDM applications, features a servo design that provides cycle time jump rates of 196 in/min. Makino?s Intelligent Expert Systems (IES) and MGF CNC power supply allow the Edge2 Series 2000 to achieve faster machining rates and surface finishes accurate to within 2 microinches. This combination enhances deep-rib machining and simplifies unattended operation.

The IES system optimizes machine performance and controls such variables as on- and off-time, jump parameters, and current. Makino also reports that in deep-rib machining tests the system achieved a deeper depth of cut using IES? nonflush machining capabilities. High-speed jump control technology capable of 5000 mm/min jump motions improves evacuation of gases produced during this process. And because there is no spark gap variation in nonflush machining, consistent surface finishes and better mold release is achieved, the company reports.

Other features of the EDM center include an eight- or 16-station automatic electrode changer for unattended operation, an MR rotating head capable of standard x-axis high-speed pulse machining at 5 m/min, an automatic fire extinguisher to enhance safety, a fixed table that eliminates dielectric weight shift during machining and improves servo reaction speed and precision, and Makino?s drop tank design for easy workspace access. Finally, the machine uses 12-by-10-by-10-inch travels and weighs 6000 lb.
