Materials supplier Evonik (Chinaplas booth 17-D87) is boosting capacity in China for its polyether block amide (PEBA) copolymer elastomers in China. Construction will commence in the fall of 2023 with completion slated for one year later. Together with a debottlenecking in Marl, Germany, overall capacity for PEBA will double.

PEBA is used widely in midsoles of sports shoes, and ski and hiking boots on account of its superior low temperature flexibility properties, but it also finds use in automotive applications such as airbags and noiseless automatic transmission gears, where it is blended with plastics such as polyacetal, according to Janny Ji, director of PA 12 Granules and Compounds at Evonik. PEBA is also used in hydraulic pressure lines for trucks.

Evonik is also developing applications for its Vestamid polyamide (PA) 12 resin in the new energy vehicle (NEV) market. “PA 12 has a long history with fuel lines [for internal combustion engine vehicles] in terms of chemical and thermal properties. As we transition to new energy vehicles, we believe the same properties will be important for battery cooling,” said Senior Vice President Christina Walkosak, Product Line Granules & Compounds at Evonik.

Other Evonik highlights at Chinaplas directed at the NEV market include:

  • Battery cooling lines made with Vestamid polyamide (PA) 12 that are lighter than metal or rubber, more cost efficient, and have high cold-impact resistance over a long lifespan.

  • High-voltage electrical busbars made with Vestamid that meet several UL fire ratings, including Level V0. Vestamid is a material that is recognized by OEMs and suppliers for its high-performance properties.

  • Accurel DS series highly concentrated “dry silane” masterbatches that can be applied in cable compounds, including EV applications, to improve mechanical and electrical properties, enhance heat distortion temperature and hot set performance, and improve moisture and corrosion resistance.

  • Multi-layer hydrogen pipelines made with Vestamid, which have low precipitation, low permeability, and impact resistance at cold temperatures. The inner-layer conductive material also prevents static charge, giving an added level of protection to hydrogen pipelines.

Chinaplas 2023 runs from April 17 to 20 at the Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center.
